Migrating Field Experience — Out with the old & in with the new

Roberts Wesleyan was using a small placement and hours tracking service to manage field experience in
their Department of Social Work. The program needed to find a more robust solution that could not only
track placements but also manage course assignments, surveys, and videos. Before beginning the arduous
task of researching possible solutions to fit the bill, the unit administrator, Kelly King, was first challenged to review her program’s existing protocols. She had worked hard to develop the department’s forms and
processes and wanted to leverage as much of that work as possible.
Kelly was faced with logistics issues such as breaking up forms for multiple assessors, as well as reporting
issues related to building forms that would produce the data her program needed for accreditation
In the fall 2015, Kelly and her team switched to Tk20 to manage placements in the field, as well as the
course assignments, surveys, and videos used throughout the program. By choosing to migrate their old
tracking service to a comprehensive field experience management solution in Tk20, Kelly was able to reduce the amount of time her field instructors spent in the system and collect much more data from students and assessors. Kelly also now has access to reports which tell her the percentage of students in each program who achieve specific CSWE milestones.
Kelly and her team are now fully up and running in Tk20. She has implemented Field Experience over
multiple semesters for both Master’s and Bachelor’s social work programs. Roberts Wesleyan has also
started using Tk20 for course evaluations, surveys, and to host simulation labs. While in the field, students
are able to record and watch themselves and others, and then upload the videos to an assignment.
